Text and Textiles
April 1-2, 2010
Supply Fee will include handouts, a kit of assorted fabric, and the use of communal supplies such as fabric paint,
silk-screens, markers, Bubble Jet Set, freezer paper, and printer. (Supply fee is included in your workshop fee)
- Basic Class Supplies:
- Notebook and/or sketchbook
- Pencil
- Hand sewing needles - an assortment to accommodate different weight threads
- Threads- an assortment of weights and colors. Some suggestions: embroidery floss (rayon or cotton),
perle cotton, and those luscious hand-dyed threads you've been hoarding.
- Fabric- be sure to bring some solids as well as a variety of fabric you want to try adding text to.
We will be working small so you won't need more than a fat quarter of any one fabric.
- To make a print table surface for silk-screening, please bring an old towel that does not have an embossed design on
it and 3-4 pieces of tightly woven scrap fabric large enough to tape over it. (You need several pieces of scrap fabric
to allow you to replace pieces that have accumulated fabric paint in the screening process. This will ensure you don't transfer
that paint to the next item you're printing.)
- Masking tape
- Small containers for mixing colors (recycled yogurt cups or other plastic containers are great; even better with lids)
- Rags or paper towels for clean up
- Apron
- Chocolate (some people consider this optional; you be the judge)
Optional:
- Silk-screens, thermo-faxes, or rubber stamps with text or letters (don't go out and buy them just for class;
just bring them if you already have them)
- Computer, printer, and appropriate cables (if you are very familiar with yours and don't want to wait
for the class printer; I am NOT a computer expert and won't be able to help you figure out how to make yours print!)
