Frequently Asked Questions
What is considered the "Lower Mainland"?
The Lower Mainland is everything contained within a triangle from West Vancoouver to Delta to Chilliwack
If live outside the lower mainland and drop off my slides at a meeting do I still pay for shipping?
Yes. The shipping is to cover the return postage.
Can I send black and white or colour?
Yes. Both black and white and colour are accepted in both slides and negatives
Why does it take 2 weeks?
Since I am a volunteer archivist for our guild I am not able to dedicate time every day. Two weeks is a maximum time it would require to get 10 slides finished. In most cases it will probably take less time. If for some reason there is a rush for the images to be digitized you can indicate that and I will do the best I can to get them done quickly.
Can I donate my originals?
Yes. Our mandate includes collecting images of the work of our artists. If your images are of your work while you were a guild member, or part of an exhibition related to the Vancouver Guild of Fibre Arts. We would be happy to care for a store your originals. In these cases a form will be sent to you that will transfer custody of your slides to the archives.
What do you mean transfer custody?
Transfer of custody when donating originals to the archives occurs so the the archives gains copyright of the images. This is important because the archives wants to promote access to our holdings not have a collection that is unaccessable for research, education, and inspiration.
How does my $2.00 per slide help the archives?
Archival supplies are quite expensive as they have to be acid and lignin free. The material requires archival boxes, folders, sleeves, plastic paper clips, and acid-free pens
How do I access the archives?
Currently the archives are housed at my house as the conditions at Aberthau was unsuitable. If you have an inquiry please email archive@vgfa.org. Finding aids will soon begin to appear on the archives webpage and you will be able to browse what is in the collection. We are in a unique situation in which we do not have copyright of much of collection thus we cannot place it online for another 50 years. If you notice images of your work listed and would like to transfer copyright of these images to the archives then it would help to make our collection more accessable.
