Social Media: connecting fibres in cyberspace

Welcome back from summer vacation! Tune in with Elizabeth and Christine at the first meeting and find out how they spent the summer updating the guild website, blog, and library...

Social media includes all those Internet resources that allows us to interact with various communities online. We'll be presenting an overview of those online sites that will benefit the guild and you as individuals connected in a larger artist community.

We're also going to demonstrate a digital/physical hybrid presentation style that can be used during the meetings. This can help members practice presenting skills as well as highlight ideas and creativity. You don’t want to miss this exciting opportunity to be a part of this years programming and to become more engaged with your guild and your community.

AGM and Yvonne Stowell: “First Five Years at FibreWorks”

Yvonne's talk and slideshow will celebrate what she playfully refers to as 'Pender Harbour--Fibre Arts Capital of the Universe.' Yvonne's passion for the texture and colour of natural fibres has taken her from the prairies to a life on the west coast, where, along with husband Reg, she has created a unique centre for the fibre arts. In addition to her private studio in a 28 foot yurt, in which she spins, weaves, and dyes, three additional yurts house a public gallery, classroom, and office space. FibreWorks has truly become an international mecca for the fibre arts.

Sharon Kallis - Environmental Artist

Sharon is a sculptor who works with what the land produces. She will focus on weaving and crocheting community projects with invasive plants, natural dye experiments with garden green waste and images from a recent trip to Haida Gwai. She will talk about her upcoming project: "The Urban Weaver", a collaboration with Stanley Park Ecology Society and Todd Devries (Haida cedar weaver) and Debra Sparrow ( Musqueum blanket weaver). They will use the Stanley Park invasive plant bio-mass, connecting with local makers and teaching weaving techniques with these unusual materials to women in the downtown eastside and youth at risk.
