Colour on the Couch is offered – April 3-7, 2010 at Loon Lake Research, Maple Ridge, B.C. by Barbara Shelly.

This workshop is designed for artist’s intent on understanding colour and manipulating it for maximum impact.
Sequentially, we will:

1. Analyze the separate dimensions of colour
2. Introduce a system for controlling colour in context
3. Analyze the compositional use of colour by great masters
4. Apply these realms of knowledge to personal artwork

No mess, no fuss! There is no painting involved.
Exercises and studies will be undertaken with and extensive range of coloured papers supplied to each student. Solutions to proposed exercises will vary widely, and although there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers, students will gradually learn to manipulate colour for desired effects.

An analysis of paintings by the great masters will reveal their calculated use of colour in composition. El Greco, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Chagall, and Bonnard -- we all have favourite painters, but why their work is so powerful and permeating is often quite mystifying. Students will discover that colour is the structural foundation in great art, and will subsequently apply this knowledge in their own personal imagery.
